Effects of cultivars and nitrogen management on wheat grain yield and protein

Low grain protein in hard red winter (HRW) wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a serious challenge for rainfed growers, particularly years with elevated yield. Proper nitrogen (N) management adequate N rate and application timing critical optimizing yield content. This 2-yr experiment evaluated the effects of different rates timings (fall, spring, split) on two HRW cultivars. Field studies were conducted at four sites across Nebraska under conditions 2018/2019 (Year 1) 2019/2020 2). A split-plot randomized complete block design cultivars as whole plots factorial combinations six three subplots was used replications. Grain associated positively negatively water supply to demand ratio (WS/WD) season. Freeman cultivar yielded better year higher WS/WD newly developed cultivar, Ruth, lower year. Nitrogen fertilization significantly increased site-years moderately WS/WD. There an increase increasing all site-years.
